On the Council Grounds How does 20 degrees, 6 hours of daylight a day, 4-5 months of overcast gray skies, and snow sound? Not to great, but to our national symbol, the bald eagle, it it a part of the life cycle. Right outside the town of Haines, 3500-4000 eagles fly to the area to feast on a late salmon run on the Chilkat River. This area is locally called the Council Grounds. And to find 17 eagles on a tree is not uncommon during the months of November through February. Eagles, being a solitary bird, tolerate each other in order to eat before the really harsh winter snows arrive.
