Balanced
Rock
This 55-foot giant is an amazing sight from the road, and even
more impressive when you get right up to it, on the short, easy
trail that circles it. Like most of the arches, spires, and
hoodoos in the park, it's composed of Entrada Sandstone, which
has three members, or divisions. The 4-thousand pound boulder at
the top of Balanced Rock is composed of the smooth and solid
slick rock member, and the bottom pedestal is the wavy looking
Dewey Bridge Mudstone member, which is softer and erodes more
quickly. The top layer, Moab Tongue, wore away from Balanced
Rock long ago, but can be seen at the top of Delicate Arch. As
time passes, the Dewey Bridge Mudstone layer will erode to the
point that it can no longer support the slick rock . . . and
Balanced Rock will be no more. |
