Trailside Beauties

The Smoky Mountains National Park is pretty almost any time, but springtime in the park is certainly one of its most colorful times of year. This is a shot of the Crested Dwarf Iris. I found this patch of flowers along side a trail in the Greenbriar section of the park. They can be found in almost all areas of the park, but this was one of the biggest patches of iris's I've seen. The flower is usually a rich blue, but occasionally a light purple, with a touch of yellow and white in the central part of the flower. And it should be noted that the Iris is the Tennessee State Flower.
